Meet Andy - A Sweet Beagle Looking for a Fresh Start!
Andy is a resilient little guy who has had a rough start in life, but with your support, he's on the road to recovery! Found as a hunting dog, Andy was abandoned and nearly frozen. Thankfully, a kind-hearted person rescued him just in time. When he first arrived at the foster home in St. Louis, he was starving and extremely scared. But despite his rough beginnings, he’s showing signs of trust and is starting to blossom in the care of his foster.
At first, we didn’t know much about Andy other than he seemed to be around 5 years old, and that he desperately needed help. When he arrived at his foster home on February 21st, he weighed only 13.8 pounds – far too thin for a beagle of his age. His foster mom described him as “tiny” and “so bony.”
With structured feedings and lots of love, Andy’s weight has been steadily improving! By March 5th, he weighed 17.4 pounds – a nice increase, but still has a way to go to get back to a healthy weight. Though it’s hard to get good pictures of him, his personality is really starting to shine through.
Andy is still very nervous, especially in new situations, like at the vet. During the first attempt at a heartworm test, he was so frightened that he had an accident and became frightened and agitated, so the exam was stopped and Andy was taken home. At home he allows his foster mom to hold him and comfort him, a huge step forward for a dog who is so unsure of the humans around him. He may not be 100% trusting yet, but every day is progress! He’s really bonding with the other dogs in his foster home, and it’s helping to calm his fears while bringing out the playful pup inside him.
Sadly, Andy did test positive for heartworm at his second testing attempt. This means he will be staying with his foster in St. Louis for treatment and recovery. He will need vaccines, neutering, and a microchip, but those things will have to wait until he’s stronger.
Andy’s journey is just beginning, and we’re committed to helping him heal physically and emotionally. He has so much potential and with patience and care, he will become the loving companion he was always meant to be.
Stay tuned for more updates as Andy recovers from his tough past. We’re cheering for him – let’s go, Andy!
