I'm ready for my new family!

Hi! My Name Is Alfie

I'm Available

PENDING ADOPTION! Are you looking for a charming, social, and slightly opinionated beagle to join your family? Alfie might just be your guy! At 8 years old, this middle-aged gentleman has all the lovable quirks you’d expect from a seasoned beagle: he’s vocal, affectionate, food-motivated, and absolutely obsessed with toys. Seriously—he insisted we mention that twice. He is also as energetic as a 4 year old!.  He's got some spunk! Alfie is currently looking for a semi-active family who enjoys leisurely walks, plenty of cuddle time, and doesn't mind sharing their bed. And also… buys a lot of toys. (Did we mention the toys?) Alfie came to Bassetts and Beagles of the Heartland Rescue after a stay at a shelter in Iowa where he had an unexplained cough. BBRH was told his cough would probably be there for life but on a whim, the foster tried some approved allergy meds since he was licking his paws.  2 weeks late and NO COUGH!  This boy has allergies!  Veterinarians don’t anticipate future complications.

Alfie is currently living with a group of energetic puppies and one very grouchy beagle mix. Alfie is respectful, playful, and polite—he even manages to charm grouchy. We’ve caught them playing chase in the backyard, proving no one is immune to Alfie’s charm.

Alfie, like us all is not perfect. He is currently working on: Housebreaking (making great progress!), Begging at mealtime (Alfie says food is love. He is learning boundaries), Barking at things that move (a classic beagle move, but he’s learning that sitting earns more snacks than barking). Pro tip: He responds really well to “snack time!”

Sadly Alfie wasn't getting a lot of attention from the BBRH area so SBR offered to take him and show him the PNW. He is arriving around December 17th on this year's annual Operation Frodo. He is traveling with many other beagle who are eagerly awaiting new families.

Alife is: Neutered, Vaccinated, Microchipped, Heartworm negative and on preventative. Alfie will be in a foster home for a week or two monitoring any new allergies, so he will likely be ready for his new family the  first part of January.

Please note: Our rescue is foster-based and cannot hold dogs for future adoption due to travel, home renovations, or schedule changes. Adopters must be prepared to welcome their new companion within a reasonable timeframe.

We do our best to ensure every dog is as healthy and prepared as possible, but we ask adopters to understand that rescue dogs may need time to decompress and adjust. They are not perfect — they are simply in need of patience, understanding, and a second chance.
